Douglas sets conference record as two Bison win events on first day of United East Outdoor Track and Field Championships

WASHINGTON - The 2025 United East Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships got underway Saturday at the Thomas O. Berg Track on the campus of Gallaudet University in the nation's capital.

Senior Walter Douglas (Sanford, Fla.) broke the conference record and captured the top spot in the long jump with a top leap of 6.84 meters (22 feet, 5.25 inches). The previous record was set last year (May 4, 2024) by Ty Tindal of St. Mary's College of Maryland with a top leap of 6.52 meters.

Douglas missed the final cut for the 200-meter dash as he placed ninth in the preliminaries with a time of 23.91 seconds. The top eight finishers in the 200-meter preliminaries advance to Sunday's final event.

Sophomore Roberto Torres (Miami Gardens, Fla.) won first place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase event with a career best time of 10 minutes and 39.22 seconds.

Senior Enow Otto Jr. (Silver Spring, Md.) placed fifth in the long jump with a top leap of 5.92 meters (19 feet, 5.25 inches). Otto Jr. also participated in the 100-meter dash prelims and placed 21st with a time of 15.35 seconds.

Senior Cotis Martinez (Turlock, Calif.) participated in two throwing events; discus and javelin. In the discus event, he finished sixth overall with a top toss of 33.77 meters and he did not complete the javelin event due to rain that halted competition on Saturday. The event will resume on Sunday morning.
