WASHINGTON - Sunny skies gave way to clouds and rainstorms here Saturday at Hoy Field as the thunder and lightning washed out the second game of the United East Conference doubleheader between Gallaudet University and Penn State Abington. The early afternoon storm placed a slight damper on the Bison Senior Day.
Penn St.-Abington won the first game, 8-1, over the Bison and held a 6-3 lead after four innings in the second game before the storm began. The second game needed to get through the fifth inning to make the nine-inning game official. The game was later called and the two teams will return to Hoy Field on Sunday to play a completely new nine-inning game. None of the stats from Saturday's second game will count.
Prior to the start of the first game the Gallaudet baseball program paid tribute to their graduating seniors and recognized them and their families and friends before first pitch. Gallaudet's graduating senior class includes; Darren Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.), Christina Elsbury (Uniontown, Ohio), Eric Heinze (Blacksburg, Va.), Robert Quigley (Mountain View, Calif.), Austin Sliva-Wynne (Rosenberg, Texas) and Eli Solomon (Flushing, N.Y.).
Gallaudet (7-28, 1-16 United East) kept things close early on against Penn St.-Abington (16-16, 11-6 United East) as the Bison only trailed 2-0 through four innings. The Nittany Lions pushed across six runs in the top of the fifth inning to end the day for sophomore starting pitcher Johnathan Guerrero (Indio, Calif.), who finished with six strikeouts.
Elsbury raced over from the softball diamond and changed uniforms and pitched a scoreless top of the sixth inning to become the first person to pitch in a collegiate baseball and softball game on the same day. In this situation, Elsbury made history in near minutes as she threw a complete game in the first of two against Penn College and ran across to the baseball diamond and pitched, 10 minutes later, to complete the historic moment. Elsbury faced five batters and got three fly outs in five minutes of work. She left and went back to play the second game of the softball doubleheader.
The Bison got on the scoreboard when junior catcher Salvador Diaz (Norwalk, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Drolsbaugh.
Penn St.-Abington was led by Josh Baar (2-for-4, two runs, two RBI), who hit two triples, and Eric Rollins (2-for-3, one RBI), who added one double. Owen Lynch (2-2) got the win for the visitors.Â
