Box Score WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University baseball home schedule ended here on a sunny and warm Sunday afternoon at Hoy Field. A day after a torrential downpour scurried the Bison and Penn St.-Abington teams away to the Field House to seek shelter and caused the postponement of the third and final game of the three-game series.
That game was through four innings with the Nittany Lions up 6-3 but that game got scrapped and statistics tossed aside and a new nine-inning game took place Sunday.
Gallaudet (7-29, 1-17 United East) fell behind early after Zach Morales hit his ninth home run of the season over the left field fence in the top of the first to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead.
Penn St.-Abington (17-16, 12-6 United East) continued to add on from there en route to a 19-7 victory to complete the series sweep. Senior Sean Doherty hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning to extend the Nittany Lions' lead to 12-0.
GU scored seven runs in the bottom of the ninth inning as Penn St.-Abington reliver Luke Falcon issued six walks, hit one batter and gave up an RBI single to
Eli Solomon (Flushing, N.Y.) and a three-run double to junior
Joshua Dugan (San Antonio, Texas).
Freshman
Brandon Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) got the start on the mound for the Bison and threw five innings where he struck out one batter in the loss.
Sophomore starting pitcher Greg Wiley (4-2) picked up the win for the Nittany Lions as he threw five innings of scoreless ball, gave up two hits, four walks and struck out four batters.
Today marked the final home games for Gallaudet's graduating senior class of
Darren Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.),
Christina Elsbury (Uniontown, Ohio),
Eric Heinze (Blacksburg, Va.),
Robert Quigley (Mountain View, Calif.),
Austin Sliva-Wynne (Rosenberg, Texas) and Solomon.
The two teams combined to score 91 runs in the three-game series (25 innings).
The Bison finish 6-15 at Hoy Field this season, the most wins since going 8-16 at home in 2017.
