GU rallies to win in five sets over Gettysburg College

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — It was a collective effort for the Gallaudet University volleyball team on Tuesday night.  Down two sets to none, the Bison came together as a team to win three consecutive sets to beat Gettysburg College 3-2 (23-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-16, 15-8) in a non-conference matchup on the road.

Freshman Shayna Unger (Middletown, Md.) led the Bison (16-10) to a come from behind victory, and served the team to 10 straight points in the fourth set. Sophomore outside hitter Mari Klassen (White Rock, British Columbia) added 13 digs and 15 kills in the victory. Junior setter Paige Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) directed the victory with her fifth match of 40 or more assists, as she tallied 43 assists and eight digs against Gettysburg (11-12).

With Gallaudet down two sets to none (23-25, 18-25) and trailing 8-4 in the third set, the Bison gathered some momentum and held off the Bullets 25-16. In the fourth set, after a kill by Bullets freshman setter Lizzy Kuhn put Gettysburg in the lead 9-8, Unger strung together an impressive serving series with 10 straight points to give the Bison another 25-16 victory. A team-high 16 kills in the fourth set propelled the team into the final set.

In the deciding fifth set, sophomores Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.) and Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) added two kills each to give Gallaudet the 15-8 victory and an inspiring come from behind win. Junior setter Micaela Paulone (Fishers, Ind.) aided the Bison in victory with her team-high 15 digs, her seventh consecutive contest with double-digit digs.

Gallaudet finished the game with 14 service aces, 54 kills and 72 points, the team's highest amount of kills and points since its opening day victory against Widener on September 3 (55 kills, 76 points).

The Bison improve their record to 11-2 in their last 13 contests. Next up will be a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Friday, October 15, against Penn St.-Abington (4-10, 1-3 NEAC) at 3 p.m. and Penn St.-Harrisburg (8-13, 2-2 NEAC) at 7 p.m. at the Field House.
