Bison rally to open Homecoming Weekend with a win

WASHINGTON, DC--Homecoming Weekend 2007 started off with a gut-wrenching victory over the Gettysburg College Bullets. Gallaudet fell in the first game, 22-30 but persevered over the next three matches, escaping Seesaw City with wins of 30-28, 30-27 and 34-32 in front of 1,357 fans.

Tonight's match, aptly named Seesaw City for its continuous lead changes, point-for-point swapping, especially in the fourth game, where the largest lead was a mere four points, saw the Bison give Coach Lynn Ray Boren his 74th win in three seasons.

In the first game, the Bison could not overcome the early-game jitters as they let the Bullets take the lead and finish off 30-20 with strong plays by a Bullet front line with an average height of 5'10.

For the duration of the match, the Buff and Blue played solid, patient and sometimes fighting volleyball as they kept a continuous rally against Bullet blocks. Hitters Ludmila Mounty-Weinstock, Nukeitra Hayes and Amanda Krieger rotated the barrage, with 15, 13 and 12kills each.

As in last night's match against Salisbury, the match-winning point once again was determined by a service ace. Tonight's game-clincher was Katelyn Reese, who posted four of the team's 14 service aces. Senior co-captain Shana Lehmann recorded 40 digs, while fellow captain Krystle Berrigan targeted 45 assists and 20 digs. Krieger also posted 16 digs, along with Micaela Paulone's 13.

Gallaudet set the mood for the weekend, showing that believing in yourself and your teammates goes a long way, especially against a team that had previously swept them 3-0.

The Buff and Blue (21-9, 6-1 CAC) have a well-deserved break until October 23 when they visit cross-town rivals Catholic University in non-conference play. The first serve goes at 7 p.m.
