Gallaudet Athletics announces leadership change for men’s basketball program

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University athletics department announced it has parted ways with men's basketball head coach Kevin Kovacs, '95 & G-'97.

Kovacs led the men's basketball program for nine seasons, where he compiled a 70-157 (.308) record and a 61-85 (.418) mark in conference play. Kovacs had early success in his tenure, which started in 2015-16, as the Bison made it to the conference semifinals in his first two seasons.

"I have known Coach Kevin for a long time, dating all the way back to our days at the California School for the Deaf, Fremont, where he believed in me and hired me out of nowhere to be their Head Football Coach," said Gallaudet Athletic Director Warren Keller, '10. "Kevin has made a positive impact in the Deaf Athletics field, both in the youth and college scene, for a very long time. I will miss him and thank him for his service."

Gallaudet men's basketball has earned National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Awards for the past four seasons. There have been 13 all-conference honorees in nine seasons to go with three College Sports Communicators Academic All-America selections, one Jostens Trophy finalist (2019-20), and one D3hoops.com All-Region Third Team selection (2019-20). Kovacs was named North Eastern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2016-17.

A national search for the new head coach of the Gallaudet men's basketball program will begin immediately.
