Worley hits 1,000 career kills as Gallaudet defeats St. Mary’s (Md.) on Homecoming

WASHINGTON  – It was a memorable and festive day for Gallaudet University junior outside hitter Brielle Worley (Amarillo, Texas), the NCAA Division III kills leader, who reached 1,000 career kills in a Bison uniform on Saturday in the Field House in front of a Homecoming crowd of 524.

Worley needed six kills to hit the milestone and Worley achieved the mark during the second set as the Gallaudet women's volleyball defeated St. Mary's College of Maryland, 3-1 (23-25, 25-9, 25-20, 25-18) in United East play.

Gallaudet (21-5, 9-0 United East) extends its 15-match win streak and remains perfect in conference play.

The Seahawks (12-13, 6-2 United East) held an advantage over Gallaudet in hitting percentage and total kills, .250 to .225 and 16 to 14, respectively. That edge helped St. Mary's (Md.) secure the first-set victory and snapped GU's 15-set winning streak.

The buff and blue responded with six service aces and recorded an impressive .417 hitting percentage with 13 kills on 24 attempts and three errors in the second set to put GU back on track.

In the final two sets, GU tallied 22 more kills and five service aces to win the game, 3-1.

GU finished with 49 kills and 12 aces. The Bison have now totaled 293 service aces through 26 matches, leading all NCAA Division III women's volleyball programs.

Worley finished the game with 19 kills to increase her season total to 434. She added 11 digs and served three aces. Senior setter Ella Gamble (Cullowhee, N.C.), the NCAA Division III leader in service aces, finished the game with four service aces to increase her season total to 100. Gamble passed out 39 assists and recorded 11 digs for the double-double. Senior outside hitter Citrine Lummer (Frederick, Md.) posted a double-double with 15 kills and tied the match-high for digs (14). Junior middle hitter Jada Zarembka (Riverside, Calif.) added 10 kills, seven digs, two blocks and one ace.

St. Mary's (Md.) was led by Maya Mauro's 15 kills and Camilla Galeano added 20 assists and 14 digs.
