GU drops a pair on the road to Penn St.-Abington

ABINGTON, Pa. - The Gallaudet University softball team dropped a pair of United East Conference - Volt Division games here Saturday to Penn St.-Abington. The Bison lost 8-0 and 9-1 in five innings to the Nittany Lions. 

Gallaudet (4-22, 0-16 United East) remains winless in conference play and is eliminated from postseason play with four Volt Division games left on the schedule. Penn St.-Abington (16-16, 9-7 United East) swept the season series against the Bison, 4-0. 

Game 1: Penn St.-Abington 8, Gallaudet 0 (F/5)
GU stuck around with the Nittany Lions in the first game as the game was scoreless until the bottom of the second when the Nittany Lions plated one run. The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when the home team scored five times to break open the game. The game ended by the eight-run mercy rule in the fifth inning once the Nittany Lions scored twice.

The Bison only had two hits in the game. First year Olivia Taufu'i (Blackfoot, Idaho) singled in the second inning and sophomore Lou Cherena (El Paso, Texas) had a bunt single in the fourth.

Sophomore pitcher Christina Elsbury (Uniontown, Ohio) took the loss for the Bison as she logged 4.2 innings.

Game 2: Penn St.-Abington 9, Gallaudet 1 (F/5)
The Nittany Lions offense continued to roar in the second game as they scored runs in every inning. Penn St.-Abington scored four runs in the bottom of the first and added one run each in the second and third innings to jump out to a 6-0 lead.

GU got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Cherena doubled home Elsbury to plate the first run on the day for the Bison. Gallaudet was held to three hits in the game.

Penn St.-Abington scored twice in the bottom half of the fourth and added one more run in the fifth to end the game by the eight-run mercy rule.

Sophomore Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) took the loss for the Bison in the circle as she threw 4.1 innings and recorded four strikeouts. 

UP NEXT
GU returns home to host Penn College (17-7, 9-3 United East) this Wednesday, April 24, at 3 p.m. for a conference doubleheader. This is the final home games for the Bison this season.
