WINCHESTER, Va. - The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team bounced back here Friday with two wins to begin the Shenandoah Invitational. The Bison defeated Misericordia University in five sets, 3-2, and swept Hood College in straight sets, 3-0.
Gallaudet (5-2) took the first sets against Misericordia 25-13 and 27-25 before the Cougars rallied with two back-to-back 25-20 set wins to force a fifth and final set. The Bison won that set going away, 15-9.
Sophomore
Citrine Lummer (Frederick, Md.) led the Bison with 21 kills and four aces while senior
Natalie Clayberg (Pella, Iowa) tallied 19 kills and two block solos. Junior setter
Ella Gamble (Cullowhee, N.C.) passed out 41 assists in the win.
In the nightcap, Gallaudet won 25-11, 25-23, 27-25 over the Blazers from Hood. Lummer led the way with 11 kills and Gamble recorded 22 assists and three aces. The Bison were big upfront with 10 team blocks led by juniors
Anya Pothorski (Columbus, Ohio) and
Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) who tallied six blocks each.
UP NEXT
GU will play two more matches on Saturday, Sept. 9, to complete the two-day tournament. The Bison will begin the day against Mary Baldwin University at 12:30 p.m. before a 2:30 p.m. match against the host Hornets from Shenandoah.
