Gallaudet sweeps Geneva

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader Saturday against Geneva College at a blustery Hoy Field. The Bison needed extra innings to defeat the Golden Tornadoes, 10-9 in eight innings, and held on to win the second game, 7-5.

Gallaudet (5-5) matches its win total from last season just 10 games into the 2023 season.

The Bison used small ball to manufacture their runs in both games.

In the first game, Geneva jumped out on Bison starting pitcher Brandon Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) to score five runs in the top of the first inning. GU responded with three runs in the bottom half.

Gallaudet added its fourth run in the second then pushed across four runs in the bottom of the third to take an 8-5 lead.

GU took a 9-5 lead into the seventh inning before the Golden Tornadoes plated four runs off Drolsbaugh to knot the game at nine apiece.

In the eighth inning, senior outfielder Austin Sliva-Wynne (Rosenberg, Texas) walked, then advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a fly ball. Sliva-Wynne scored moments later after freshman Darico Castillo (Passaic, N.J.) sent a chopper to third base, which was misplayed, which allowed Castillo to reach base as Sliva-Wynne touched home plate to end the game.

Senior Darren Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) came in on relief of his younger brother, Brandon, and picked up the win.

In the second game, Silva-Wynne (2-1) threw a complete game where he allowed five runs (three earned) in seven innings where he struck out two batters.

GU scored three runs in the first and fourth innings as the Bison built an early 4-0 lead and later increased it to 7-2 before the Golden Tornadoes scored a run in each of the final three innings.
