WASHINGTON - It was a rude awakening for the Gallaudet University softball team, who returned from its Spring Break trip to sunny and warm Florida, as the Bison stepped onto the cold and frigid turf field at the GU Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Gallaudet (6-8) and Penn St.-Scranton (2-2) battled the elements and each other in two non-conference games on a blustery and sunny day in the nation's capital. The Bison made quick work of the Nittany Lions in the first game as they won 17-4 in five innings but the second contest went the distance in a closer contest that GU won, 8-7.
In the first game, the Nittany Lions scored three runs to begin the game before Gallaudet responded with seven in the bottom of the first and five runs in the second. GU tacked on three more runs in the third and two more for good measure in the fourth en route to the 13-run victory. The Nittany Lions made nine errors in the field as the Bison stampeded around the bases as GU recorded nine stolen bases.
Penn St.-Scranton, a non-NCAA school, is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).Â
In the second game, GU scored a run in the bottom of the first but the Nittany Lions took a 3-1 lead as they manufactured three runs in the top half of the second. Gallaudet responded with four runs in the bottom half to take a 5-3 lead.
GU scored a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings while the Nittany Lions scored one run in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. The Bison made two costly errors in the seventh which allowed Penn St.-Berks to score a run and load the bases before a line drive double play ended the 8-7 game.
Sophomore Elaine Swecker (San Diego, Calif.) led the Bison in the second game with two hits and four runs scored. In the doubleheader, Swecker went 5-for-6, seven runs, three RBI and an inside-the-park home run in the first game in the third inning.Â
Swecker (1-3) threw a complete game in the second contest as she allowed seven runs (five earned) on 11 hits, four walks and struck out 10.
In the first game, freshman Christina Elsbury (Uniontown, Ohio) earned her fourth win of the season with a five-inning complete game where she struck out 10 of the 25 batters faced and walked five on four hits and four runs (two earned).Â
