Stergio nets 29 as Bison lose first game of the season

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Gallaudet University women's basketball team lost 73-66 to Alvernia University late Saturday night in the Washington & Lee Tip-Off tournament. Senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) led the way with her first double-double of the season as she recorded games highs in points (29) and rebounds (13).

The Bison (0-1) led 43-34 at halftime but lost its lead in the second half at the 10:22 mark after the Crusaders dropped a 3-pointer to take a one-point lead and spark the Alvernia offense. While the Bison fought hard to secure the win, turnovers were too frequent and the team missed some key scoring opportunities shooting 11-of-20 from the free throw line.

Gallaudet senior guard Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.) scored 13 points shooting 3-for-5 from behind the 3-point line and also had four assists and seven rebounds. Freshman forward Isabella Hasty (Fort Worth, Texas) came off the bench and pitched in seven points and nine rebounds.

The Crusaders (1-0) were led by Chelsea Ebersole and Stevie Fortna who scored 21 and 19 points, respectively. Trayvonda Rice and Kaitlyn Yoh helped the team defense as they each recorded eight rebounds in the win.

The Bison will play the host Generals from Washington & Lee University in the consolation game tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 17) at 2 p.m.
