Gallaudet baseball snaps 37-game losing streak against St. Mary's (Md.)

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Fourteen years to the day Gallaudet University's baseball last defeated St. Mary's (Md.) College and on Tuesday history repeated itself as the Bison won another three-run game, 6-3, against the Seahawks in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader. The win snaps a 37-game losing streak against the Seahawks dating back to March 29, 1997 when GU last won 4-1 against SMC when both teams were in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC). Gallaudet left the CAC last season after 20 years in the conference.

St. Mary's (16-12) bounced back with a 7-5 win against Gallaudet (8-15) in the second game of the doubleheader on the picturesque but cool and sunny afternoon.

GU freshman William Bissell (Brewer, Maine) hit his team-leading third home run in the first game to help pace the Bison offense. Bissell finished 3-for-3 at the plate, scored two runs and drove in two. He plated Gallaudet's first run in the first inning with a RBI double to right field. Bissell led off the fifth inning and connected off newly inserted Seahawk pitcher Adam Shenk with a home run to right.

Bison junior outfielder William Chapman (Los Angeles, Calif.) collected two hits, including a double in the third inning as he later scored on a RBI single by freshman catcher Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nevada). Fellow freshman third baseman Chris Guinn (McLoud, Okla.) followed with a RBI single through the right side of the Seahawk defense to plate Bissell.

Senior pitcher Zane Noschese (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up the win as he hurled 5.1 innings, allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks. Noschese improved his record to 3-0. Junior pitcher Ryan Hastings (Cherry Valley, Mass.) picked up his first save as he entered in the sixth with the bases loaded holding a 6-1 lead.

In the second game, St. Mary's jumped out early off freshman starting pitcher Tyler Crace (Westfield, Ind.) as he surrendered a three-run homer to Seahawk third baseman Keith Johnson. Gallaudet responded with two runs in the bottom frame as Hicks and Guinn drove in a run each. SMC tacked on runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings as the Seahawks led 7-2 through six. Gallaudet added three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

GU begins its North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) schedule this weekend, weather permitting, as the Bison welcome SUNYIT to Hoy Field on Saturday, April 2, for a doubleheader with the first game set to start at noon.
