ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Over the course of
24 hours the Gallaudet University baseball team had two
opportunities to claim its first win of the season. Unfortunately,
for the Bison both chances vanished late in each ballgame as
Gallaudet was swept by St. Mary's (Md.) College over the
weekend. The Seahawks took the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC)
series as they won 14-1 and 8-2 on Saturday in Washington, D.C.,
and then rallied to win 9-3 on Sunday in St. Mary's City, Md.
GU held a 2-0 lead late in the second game of the three-game
series on Saturday. The Bison (0-13, 0-9 CAC) committed three of
their five errors in the sixth inning as the Seahawks (7-11, 4-5
CAC) plated eight runs (three earned). Sophomore left-handed
pitcher Ryan Hastings (Cherry Valley, Mass.)
pitched the complete game (seven innings) as he allowed four walks
and made three strikeouts in the tough luck loss.
On Sunday, freshman Steven Gosselin (Hayward,
Calif.) made his first-ever start for the Bison and was quite
impressive as he pitched a complete game. Gosselin (0-1)
surrendered two runs in the first inning to the Seahawks but then
kept SMC off the scoreboard for five straight innings. The Seahawks
pushed across two runs in the seventh inning as they trailed 3-2 to
Gallaudet. SMC tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the eighth
inning for insurance. Gosselin's final line was nine runs
(eight earned) allowed on 11 hits in eight innings pitched where he
walked one and struck out one. Once again poor fielding and three
wild pitches allowed St. Mary's back into the game and helped
the Seahawks claim their fourth straight win.
Hastings paced the Gallaudet offense in the three-game series as
he batted .429 (3-for-7) at the plate as he scored twice and
knocked in one run. Sophomore Jeremy Shepps
(Mechanicsburg, Pa.) collected three hits in the three-game set and
collected one RBI. Junior outfielder Zane Noschese
(Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored two runs and had two hits at the plate
against St. Mary's.
Shepps took the loss on the mound in the first game of the
series against St. Mary's on Saturday. SMC hit a combined
three home runs in the doubleheader (seven innings each game) on
Saturday at Hoy Field. For the weekend the Bison committed 10
errors in the field.
Gallaudet remains in CAC action this week as the Bison travel to
Dover, Del., on Tuesday, March 23, to face Wesley College for one
game and then will host the Wolverines for two games on Saturday,
March 27.
NOTE: GU announced the make-up date for its
postponed doubleheader with Stevenson University. The Bison will
now host the Mustangs for two games on Thursday, April 1, as the
first game will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Hoy Field.
