WASHINGTON, D.C. (1/23/07)—Mike Gray led the way for
Marymount's offense, scoring 36 of the team's 44 points
in the paint and shooting 6-for-6 from the line. The same
Bison defense that handled Catholic University's big men
realized their youthful inexperience against the quicker Marymount
team.
The game started off with both offenses firing, tying the score
four times in the first 10 minutes (there would be a fifth
tie at 26-26 later in the half). Bison guard Jonathan
Valencia showed the way for his teammates, swishing 11 of his
team-high 16 points. Guard Sekoe White, who is sixth on the
CAC scoring ranks (17.3 PPG) had a cool night, focusing on defense
as he posted 12 points. Teammate Jon Mowl went into the
locker room with 11 points, tying Valencia's team-high 3
assists.
The game went into halftime after a Mowl trey sank in the closing
seconds, cutting Marymount's lead to one point, 30-29.
At this point, the Buff and Blue was on top of Marymount in overall
shooting, leading 52% to 45% with a trio of three-pointers
contrasted by Marymount's 0-for-5. A key factor for the
second half would be limiting Marymount's trips to the
free-throw line; Marymount took 10 of 14 shots, while Gallaudet
missed its sole attempt at the line.
Gallaudet's game plan in the second half went awry, due in
large part to the nimble 6-foot-5 Mike Gray's 20 points off
9-for-11 shooting between the blocks. No Bison approached double
digits scoring in this half, on account of a cold shooting
run. The Buff and Blue managed to close the gap to within a
basket before Marymount surged ahead on a 7-0 run that eventually
resulted in a 20-point victory margin.
Gallaudet(3-13, 0-7)'s next opponent is CAC-leading Hood
College (14-3, 7-1 CAC) and third-ranked scorer Ryan Junghans (20.6
PPG). Look for a power matchup between Bison guard Sekoe
White and the sophomore Junghans on Thursday January 25th.
